The pesticide DDT is an example of a chemical agent.

  • Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a chemical insecticide that is synthesized in laboratories. Launched in the 1940s, DDT was one of the modern synthetic insecticides.
  • Originally vastly used, it was eventually found that DDT has numerous harmful effects that make it unsuitable for use.
  • DDT disrupts the endocrine system and adversely affects neurological as well as reproductive functions.
  • India imposed a partial ban on DDT in 2008 after it was found that birds that ingested the chemical gave eggs that had very soft shells and easily cracked.
  • However, in spite of the fact that DDT is not used in fields anymore, it continues to be used in insect fumigation.
