The desert is a difficult place to be aplant because of the dry, hot air. To move nutrients up their roots, plantsevaporate water from their leaves in a process called transpiration. But in thedesert, where water is hard to come by, many plants have adaptations to help save water.

Desert plants have more risk of losing water, which they should avoid, so they don't have leaves. Spines prevent transpiration. They also can't attract animals. So, spines are quite useful for desert plants.
