18. A sample of gas has a volume of 8.5 dm3 at an unknown temperature. When the sample
is submerged in ice water at 0°C, its volume gets reduced to 6.37 dm'. What is its initial

Explanation:

Let initial volume be V and final volume be V',

Similarly let the initial temperature be T and final temperature be T'

therefore, V=8.5 dm³, V'=6.37 dm³

T=?,  T'=0°C= 273 K

Using Charles law,

V/T=V'/T'

8.5/T=6.37/273

T=8.5×273÷6.37

T= 364.28 K

so, T= 364.28-273 = 91.28°C
