Answer:

by IODOFORM test.. .

Explanation:

the first compound will give the IODOFORM test because of the presence of CH3 group attached with C=O and will give colour. I don't exactly remember wht colour it is , right now...

the second compound will not give IODOFORM test.. as CH3 is not present which is a pre requisite for iodoform test.

Do, read about this test once on internet or this is given in 12th chemistry NCERT volume 2 , chapter 3 of volume 2.

CH₃-CO-C₂H₅ is distinguished by the Iodoform test.

We know that compounds having the keto-methyl group(R-CO-CH₃) responds positive to the Iodoform test.

Amongst the two given compounds, if we look closely, we can see that in CH₃-CO-C₂H₅, the keto-methyl group is present whereas in C₂H₅-CO-C₂H₅, this group is absent.

When compounds having this keto methyl group is reacted with I₂ in the presence of NaOH or KOH, an yellow solid having the smell of iodex, iodoform (CHI₃) is produced.

So, in this way CH₃-CO-C₂H₅ responds to the iodorm test by producing iodoform.

CH₃-CO-C₂H₅ + I₂ + NaOH → C₂H₅-CO-O⁻Na⁺ + CHI₃
