Given : 18 litres of pure water was added to a vessel containing 80 litres of pure milk. 49 litres of the resultant mixture was then sold and some more quantity of pure milk and pure water was added to the vessel in the respective ratio of 2 : 1.  the resultant respective ratio of milk and water in the vessel was 4 : 1,

To Find : what was the quantity of pure milk added in the vessel? (in litres)

Solution:

18 litres of pure water was added to a vessel containing 80 litres of pure milk.

=>Mixture = 80 + 19 = 98  Litre

Water = 18 litre

Milk = 80 Litre

49 litre of Mixture  = 40 litre Milk  + 9 litre Water

Left = 49 litre of Mixture  = 40 litre Milk  + 9 litre Water

Added Milk = 2A  litre  & water = A  Litre

=> Milk  = 40 + 2A  Litre

   Water = 9 + A  litre

(40 + 2A)/(9 + A)  = 4/1

=> 40 + 2A = 36 + 4A

=> 2A = 4

=> A  = 2

2A  = 4

quantity of pure milk added in the vessel = 4 Litres

Step-by-step explanation:

Given 18 litres of pure water was added to a vessel containing 80 litres of pure milk. 49 litres of the resultant mixture was then sold and some more quantity of pure milk and pure water was added to the vessel in the respective ratio of 2 : 1. If the resultant respective ratio of milk and water in the vessel was 4 : 1, what was the quantity of pure milk added in the vessel?

  • To 80 litres of pure milk 18 litres of pure water was added.
  • So quantity of water is 18 litres.
  • Quantity of milk = 80 litres
  • Therefore total quantity of both will be 18 + 80 = 98 litres.
  • 49 litres of resultant mixture was sold
  • So quantity of remaining water = 18/2 = 9 litres
  • Quantity of remaining milk = 80/2 = 40 litres.
  • Therefore remaining total quantity will be 49 litres.
  • Now the ratio is 2: 1
  • So quantity of milk added will be 2m
  • Quantity of water added will be m
  • Therefore quantity of water will be 9 + m
  • Also quantity of milk will be 40 + 2m
  • Ratio of milk and water in the vessel in the ratio is 4:1
  • So we have the equation
  •                          40 + 2m : 9 + m : 4:1
  •              Or 40 + 2m = 4 (9 + m)
  •              Or 40 + 2m = 36 + 4m
  •               Or 2m = 4
  •                 Or m = 2
  • Therefore quantity of pure milk added in the vessel will be 2m = 2(2) = 4 litres.
