19. Akash noticed that someone had carelessly thrown a banana peel on footpath. He
thought, “if someone steps up on the banana peel, he/she is likely to slip and fall."
So, he picked it up and throw it in dustbin.
Now, answer the following questions -
(i) Do you think that banana peel really slips?
(ii) Is Akash right in thinking that people can slip on a banana peel and why ?
(iii) Do you think that in every situation friction is a nuisance? If not, justify.
Answers
Answer:
(i) Well, a fresh off the fruit peel, although smooth by touch, has enough friction to prevent a major slip and fall. As thebanana peel stays on the ground, it begins to rot and get slimy. If someone were to then step on that rotting, slimy banana peel, they would be in for a decent slip.
(ii) Yes, because we slip when we step on a banana peelbecause the inner side of banana peelbeing smooth and slippery reduces the friction between the sole of our shoe and the surface of road.
(iii) Yes, Since friction is a resistive force that slows down or prevents motion, it can be a nuisance, because it can hinder motion and cause the need for expending extra energy. Friction can also cause parts in contact to heat up and can cause parts in contact to wear out.
