In the 19th century, there were basically two social evils that were deep rooted within the society and needed reforms. They can be discussed as follows:Status of women: The state of women was miserable due to evil practices like sati, child marriage and ill treatment of widows. Reformers realized that unless the status of women was improved, political progress was impossible. Some reforms took shape of Acts and were implanted strictly. Notable among them are;Child marriage restraint Act (Sarda Act) in 1929.Widow remarriage Act in 1856Sati was banned by Governor General Bentinck in 1829. Caste system: The caste system was very rigid in the 19th century. Untouchability was practiced and inter-caste dining and inter-caste marriages were taboo. Gandhji and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar played major role. Many other reformers also worked on this social discrimination. The major reforms were;Rajahmundry Social Reform Association in 1878 (towards equality of untouchables).Self Respect Movement in 1925 (towards dignity of untouchables)Harijan Sewak Sangh in 1932 (towards welfare of untouchables).
