1by2 of 4 2by9 answer

My personal style is, and I always encouraged my students to do:
Think! Think before you do things mechanically.
We have the first term: 10x4=40. Nothing to think about.
But now go to the bracketed term. Are we going to do each operation as marked? What a waste of effort.
Outside of the bracket we are asked to multiply the expression in the bracket by -2 and at the end divide by 2. That means we just need to multiply the expression in the bracket by -1, (-2/2)
Then in the bracket we are asked to square 4 and then divide by 4. That means leaving the 4 alone 4 square is 4x4 divided by 4=4
So now the term -2x(4^2/4)/2=-4, as per explanation above.
We need to divide that by 1/2, which is equivalent of multiplying by 2 ,
so- 4x2=-8
Then we need to add the last term, 9
So we have 40–8+9=41
Notice: We could have used a different approach with the bracketed term .
We could have left the multiplication factor at the beginning of the bracket alone, and simplify the operation on the right side of the bracket. As we had
-2x(4^2/4)/2/1/2, we can work on the divide by 2 and divide by 1/2. The two operation cancel each other as divide by 1/2 equals multiplying by 2. so then the bracketed expression becomes -2(4)=-8 as above
I hope you are understand my solution
