Answer:

When solving fractions the denominator (the number below the stroke) is the major factor to be considered. The denominators must be the same before the two or more fractions can be added together. Adding them together, when with a common denominator, means just adding the numerator (number above the stroke) values together and retaining the same denominator.

In the above question, 1/3 + 1/3, there is a common denominator which is “3”.

Hence the fractions can be added thus,

1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3.

However, when the denominators are not same value, ultiply both fractions with values so that their denominators will be the same.

Example: 3/5 + 3/6 (although the same numerators but the denominators differ). Hence, look for numbers that when multiplied with the denominators, they will be same.

6 for the first fraction, and 5 for the second fraction.

(6)x(3/5) + (5)x(3/6) = 18/30 + 15/30 = 33/30

Remember to always reduce the fraction (unless instructed otherwise) to its lowest form.

33/30 = 11/10.
