The jeweler actually used a solution called 'aqua regia' which is made up of Nitric Acid (HNO3) and Hydrochloric acid (HCl) in 3:1 proportion. It is basically used to remove the oxidized layer (rust) from the top to make the jewelry look new! But because it dissolves the top layer, some weight is found missing from the jewelry!

Answer:

The gold jewellery is dipped into an acidic solution called aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) for polishing. On dipping the gold jewellery in the acid solution, the outer layer of gold dissolves and the inner shiny layer appears. This causes a slight loss in its weight.
