1 kg cotton is heavier than 1 kg iron. As cotton is denser than Iron so 1kg has much large surface area than 1kg iron. So the upward force exerted by air know as the air resistance force acts more effectively on cotton making it much lighter than it actually is. So 1kg weight of cotton shown by the weighing machine is actually approx and less than its actual weight.

It will take u a little time to understand. Just search abour air resistance force for a better understanding.
