On 15th August 1947, when the entire nation was celebrating independence Gandhiji  was at Calcutta

  • A distraught Gandhi, in Calcutta, was working hard to end the violence that had torn the nation apart.
  • Gandhi arrived in Calcutta on August 9  with plans to move to Naokhali - a district torn by massacre and violence in the communities.
  • Leading figures in Calcutta begged Gandhi not to move on to East Bengal. They felt peace in all of Bengal would be restored if Gandhi could bring peace to Calcutta.
  • Beginning on August 13, Gandhi began his efforts to pacify individuals from either group and encourage them to end the violence. Gandhi marked the day on 15 August with a 24 hour fast, prayer, and yarn spinning.
