Step 1 - simplify 2/4 by removing the common factor 2 from the numerator and denominator, giving the equivalent fraction 1/2.

Step 2 - summon up your memory and realise this is 0.5

Alternatively you could multiply the numerator and denominator by 5 so we get 5/10. The point of that was to express the fraction as so many tenths.

Either way we get 0.5 and if your teacher insists on having three decimal places then that would be 0.500.
