2. A plane has a span of 12 metres. It was photographed as it was flying directly
over head with a camera with a depth of 12 cm. In the photo, the span of the
plane was 8 mm. How high was the plane when it was snapped ?

Answer:

The height of the plane is 180 m

Step-by-step explanation:

This question can be solved by similarity. The view of actual plane and the photo of the plane will be similar.

We know that when two geometric figures are similar the corresponding sides are proportional

Original span of plane = 12 m = 1200 cm = 12000 mm

Span of plane in photo = 8 mm

Depth of camera (distance of object from lens) = 12 cm = 120 mm

If the height of the plane is x then

\frac{x}{120}=\frac{12000}{8}

\implies x=\frac{12000}{8}\times 120

\implies x=180000\text{ mm}

\implies x=180\text{ m}

Hope this helps.

Answer:

Let height of plane be x

We know that when two geometrical figures are similar the corresponding sides are proportional

Original span of plane =12m=(12×100×10)mm= 12000mm

span of plane in photo =8mm

depth of camera (distance of object from lens)=12cm=(12×10)mm=120mm

if height of plane is x then

x/120= 12000/8mm

or, x= 12000/8×120mm

or, x= 180000mm

or, x = 180m
