(a) State what happens to the molecules of a gas in a sealed container when the temperature of
the gas is increased.

(b) A quantity of gas is contained in a sealed container of fixed volume. The temperature of the
gas is increased

Answer:

2 (a) When gases in containers are heated, their molecules increase in average speed. This means that they exert a greater force when they collide with the container walls, and also collide with the walls more frequently. The gas is therefore under greater pressure when its temperature is higher.

(b) The pressure law states that for a constant volume of gas in a sealed container the temperature of the gas is directly proportional to its pressure. This can be easily understood by imagining the particles of gas in the container moving with a greater energy when the temperature is increased. This means that they have more collisions with each other and the sides of the container and their kinetic energy will increase and hence the pressure is increased.
