2. A submarine, 608m below sea level, sends a SONAR signal to detect an aircraft directly above it
If it receives the signal 10 sec, later, how far is the aircraft from the submarine ?
(Speed of sound in air = 340 m/s Speed of sound in seawater = 1520 m/s)
(a) 2172m
(b) 2092m
(c) 1754m
(d) 1600m

Answer:

The aircraft is 2172 metres away from the submarine

Explanation:

The submarine sent a signal to aircraft and the signal returned to submarine in about 10 seconds. So we can say the time taken for the signal to reach the aircraft is ½ x10 =5s

Let us assume the distance of air craft from submarine is x.

So t=\frac{s 1}{v_{1}}+\frac{s 2}{v 2}

5=\frac{608}{1520}+\frac{(x-608)}{340}

X-608 = (5-0.4) × 340

So on solving the above equation we get

x = 608 + 1564

x = 2172 m

So aircraft is 2172 metres away from the submarine
