The reaction of acid and water is an exothermic reaction since a lot of heat is liberated during the reaction. This heat changes some water to steam explosively which can splash the acid on our face or clothes and cause acid burns.

Acid is added to water but water is never added to an acid. This is because if we put water in an acid, the reaction would be highly exothermic and vigorous and one may not be able to control it resulting in an explosion which may prove fatal to a person.
