This new Footover bridge was very much needed after the unfortunate stampede that took 23 lives at Elphinstone Road station on September 29, 2017. The FOB linking Elphinstone Road and Parel stations got overcrowded as people took shelter from a downpour. Trapped on the stairs and bridge, there was reportedly a rumour of the bridge collapsing that triggered the panic among people. As the crowds swelled, people were trapped and tried to escape. Many got caught in a stampede which claimed 23 lives and left over 30 injured.
