Ben set up an experiment as shown below. He placed a plant in a beaker filled with
500 ml of purple-coloured water. He poured a layer of oil on the surface of the
water and left the set-up in the classroom overnight.

(a) Ben observed the flowers turning purple the following day Explain his observation.

(b) What was the purpose of adding a layer of oil in the set-up?​

a) Conclusion: As plants absorb water from the soil which is then transported to all part of the plant. Since the water is purple the flowers also became purple.

b) A layer of oil is added to the set-up to avoid evaporation of water.
