Correct Question :-

Calculate the pressure exerted by a brick, which applies force of 2.5 N, when (a) it is placed upright on the soil (b) when it is placed on its widest base. The dimensions of the brick are 25 cm × 10 cm × 5cm.

Answer :-

(a) When the brick is placed upright :

Area in contact with soil

 = 10 \sf cm \times 5 \sf cm = \frac{10}{100} m \: \times \frac{5}{100} m \\ = \: \: \: 0.005 {m}^{2} \\ \therefore \: Pressure \: exerted = \frac{Force}{Area} = \frac{2.5 \: N}{0.005 {m}^{2} } \\ = 500 \: Pa \:

(b) When the brick is placed on its widest base :

Area in contact with soil

 = 25 \sf \: cm \: \times 10 \sf \: cm \: = \frac{25}{100}m \: \times \frac{10}{100}m \\ = 0.025 {m}^{2} \\ \therefore Pressure \: exerted \: = \frac{Force}{Area } = \frac{2.5N}{0.025 {m}^{2} } \\ = 100Pa
