Lyophilic sol - gum sol , starch .

Lyophobic Sol - gold sol , ferric hydroxide , Al(OH)

Lyophilic sol - If colloids have strong affinity between particles of dispersed phase and dispersion medium, they are called as lyophilic sols. eg - gum, starch , gelatin etc.

Lyophobic Sol - If the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium repul each other , the colloidal is called a lyophobic sol. eg- gold Sol, ferric hydroxide etc.

Lyophilic and Lyophobic sols

Explanation:

Colloids

They are the type of solution in which particle size is intermediate that is ranging from 1nm-100nm .

It has dispersion phase and dispersion medium .

The colloids are of two types (depending upon whether the dispersed phase have attraction for dispersion medium or not .

  • Lyophilic sols
  • Lyophobic sols

Lyophilic sols

In this the dispersed phase and dispersion medium have affinity for each other .

Lyophobic sols

In this the dispersed phase and dispersion medium do not have affinity for each other .

Let us classify the above given substances as lyophilic and lyophobic :

Gold sol-Lyophobic

starch sol-lyophilic

gum sol-lyophilic

ferric hydroxide sol-lyophobic

Al(OH)₃-lyophobic
