The UN Charter refers to human rights in the Preamble and Articles 1, 8, 13, 55, 56, 62, 68 and 76: Article 1 defines one of the objectives of the UN as: 'promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion'.
