Some substance produced by some viruses and bacteria.

  • Antigens consist of proteins, polysaccharides or nucleic acids.

  • Antigens determinants or epitopes are the components of antigens.

  • Each antigen carries many epitopes.

  • Antigens are of two types, namely - Complete antigens and Incomplete antigens.

  • Incomplete antigens are also known as partial antigens or " Haptens ".

  • The antigens which are present are the body's own cells are called " Self antigens ".

  • Self antigens are also known as " Autoantigens ".

  • The antigens on the non - self cells are called " Foreign antigens ".

  • Foreign antigens are also known as " Nonself antigens ".
