The most distinguishing feature of the Medieval period was the faith-based culture. Keeping in mind that “Medieval” applies basically to Europe from about the 6th to the 15th centuries, virtually all of the nations that emerged, and virtually all of the people, were Christians. Even with schisms and the Reformation, the nations and peoples remained Christian. That said, the most notable features were the extent to which the Church controlled both governance and everyday life. Christian dogma and values also controlled both economic and cultural behavior. For example, Christians could not lend money at interest (they found ways around that), and non-Christians were ostracized and persecuted, even to death. The everyday life of a common person was guided by his relationship with the church— the day was marked by prayers and trips to church; life events— baptism, marriage, funerals— were experienced in the church. One of the factors that marks the end of the Medieval period is the decline of the influence of the Church. People remained devout, but culture and civilization gradually became more controlled by the secular State, commerce, and science. So to single out one distinguishing feature of the Medieval era, it would be the extent to which it was a Christian, faith-based culture.
