Step-by-step explanation:

let the number be x²

so positibr square root = x

so

x²-x= 12

x²-x-12= 0

x²-4x+3x-12= 0

x(x-4)+3(x-4)=0

(x-4)(x+3)= 0

x = 4 , x = -3

since square root is positve , take x= 4

so the number is x²= 4² = 16
