NO,it wasn't a reward it was a bribe of course in the chapter it was shown that the king was of the frost was attacking at kaer morhen but the witchers didn't lose their hope and they bravely fought CARANTHIER but then also a handful witchers were not enough in front of the eredin's army which is also called the WHITE FROST as it explains that ,all the witchers were frozen but vesemire still had hope to save Cirilla from Eredin though he couldn't cause "Imlerith" the most loyal person of all to Eredin just came in action and broke Vesemir's neck and he'd died!
