  • Examples. Anhydrous substances exist in solid, liquid, and gas forms. Gaseous HCl is anhydrous, which differentiates it from hydrochloric acid, a solution of 37 percent HCl in water (w/w). Heating copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) yields anhydrous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4).
  • The salts which contain water of crystallisation are called hydrated salts. The salts which have lost their water of crystallisation are called anhydrous salts. Example: On strong heating, copper sulphate crystals lose all the water of crystallisation and form anhydrous copper sulphate which is white in colour.
