The four factors responsible for the growth of nationalism in India :

(i) Economic exploitation

⇒ The poor administration of the British and their policy of Drain of Wealth led to the economic discontent of various sections of the society.

⇒ The peasants , the artisans and the working classes along with the jobless educated Indians realized that the British were responsible for their economic decline of resources .

⇒ Thus all sections of the society felt that their economic salvation lay in freeing themselves from the clutches of the British which stimulated the feelings of nationalism to a great extent !

(ii) Socio-religious reform movements

⇒ Great social workers like Raja Rammohan Roy , Jyotiba Phule , Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda promoted social reforms as well as religious reforms

⇒ They removed social evils , condemned sati , polygamy , child marriage , promoted the widow remarriage , education of women and completely changed the outlook of the Society.

⇒ This led to the upliftment in the position of women in the society.

⇒ The women participated in the national movement and it also brought people of different castes closer to each other.

⇒ They strengthened morality , unity , chastity and was an important  reason for the growth of nationalistic feelings.

(iii) Role of the Press

⇒ The Press updated the Indians about world affairs.

⇒ It criticized and revealed the true nature of the British rule.

⇒ It made people aware and connected people

⇒ This made possible the spread of ideals of equality , liberty , justice and fraternity throughout India .

⇒ It hence contributed to the growth of nationalism in India .

(iv) Repressive measures

⇒ The Vernacular Press Act and the Indian Arms Act made it clear to the Indians that the British were discriminating against them .

⇒ The repressive measures of removal of import duties and reduction of ages for government jobs also instilled feelings of suspicion against the British .

⇒ The cancellation of the Ilbert Bill was another Blow to the Indians .

⇒ The Indians realised that justice cannot be expected where the British interests are involved.

⇒ It brought all the Indians together as the British measures affected all sections of the society.
