1) In 1791 he started the Sanskrit College at Benares for the study of Hindu law and Philosophy. (In 1958 the Sanskrit College became a university and in 1974 the name was changed to Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.) His illegitimate son, also named Jonathan Duncan, was an advocate of reforming the monetary system.

2) Three universities in three Presidency towns of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras were set up as per the recommendations of the Despatch. A major recommendation of the Wood's Despatch was to spread education among the common people and to make then vocationally efficient.
