Traditional folk art painting is found throughout world. It is the art of the people so is usually created by ordinary people who are not trained artists. Artists were once tradesmen with a strict hierarchy of apprentices, journeymen and masters; much like carpenters, plumbers, and similar tradespeople today. They spent many years training and their work could be outside of the financial reach of an average citizen. These ordinary people still loved colour and decoration so they began to develop their own ways of providing colour and decoration in a pre-mass production world.
