Sum of the present ages of Sam and Tom is 31. Tom’s age 3 years ago was 4 times the age of Sam.

x+y=31−(i)

x−3=4(y−3)−(ii)

⇒x−3=4y−12

⇒x=4y−9

Putting in (i) , we get

5y−9=31

⇒ Present age of manish=23years

⇒ Present age of savita=8 years
