n, l, m and s values of valence electrons of potassium atom

Explanation:

  • n, l, m and s are Quantum numbers. Quantum numbers are the set of number which defines an electron completely. There are four sets of quantum number

        Principle Quantum number (n)

         Azimuthal Quantum number (l)

         Magnetic Quantum number (m)

         Spin Quantum number (s)

  • Electronic configuration of potassium atom having atomic number 19 is [Ar]4s¹. Its valence shell electronic configuration is 4s¹.
  • Principle quantum number(n) for potassium atom is 4 as last electron is in N shell i.e. n = 4.
  • Azimuthal Quantum number(l) is 0 as last electron is in s-subshell so l = 0.
  • Magnetic Quantum number(m) is 0 as valence shell is in s- subshell i.e. l = 0. Value of m will be from -l to +l. Therefore, m = 0.
  • Spin Quantum number(s) usually have two values i.e. either -\frac{1}{2} or +\frac{1}{2}. So, s can be +\frac{1}{2} or -\frac{1}{2}.
