2. Give very short answer of the following question:
(i) What kind of energy does the molecules posses due to motion?
(ii) What is the limiting distance between molecules to experience intermolecular force?
(iii) Name a liquid which evaporate faster than water.
(iv) Can a medium have refractive index less than one?

Answer:

hey,

1- The energy associated with an object's motion is called kinetic energy. A speeding bullet, a walking person, and electromagnetic radiation like a light all have kinetic energy. Another example of kinetic energy is the energy associated with the constant, random bouncing of atoms or molecules.

2- Particles in a solid are tightly packed together and often arranged in a regular pattern; in a liquid, they are close together with no regular arrangement; in a gas, they are far apart with no regular arrangement.

3- As the alcohol evaporates at a much faster rate compared with water due to its lower boiling temperature (82 compared to 100 degrees C), it is able to carry away more heat from the skin. This means for a given amount of time much more alcohol evaporates than water.

4- Refractive indices less than 1 can occur and if the phase velocity of the light in the medium is faster than the speed of light. ... Negative refractive indices can occur if both the permittivity and permeability of the material are both negative at the same time.

5- The distance from the pole to the focal point is called the focal length (f). The focal length of a spherical mirror is then approximately half its radius of curvature. It is important to note up front that this is an approximately true relationship. Convex mirrors are diverging mirrors.

6- A concave mirror, or converging mirror, has a reflecting surface that is recessed inward (away from the incident light). Concave mirrors reflect light inward to one focal point. They are used to focus light.

Answers with explanation:-

(i) Kinetic Energy- The energy associated with an object's motion is called kinetic energy. A speeding bullet, a walking person, and electromagnetic radiation like light all have kinetic energy.

(ii) Three Angstroms (10^-8 cm) or less.

(iii) Alcohol: Due to its lower boiling temperature (82 compared to 100 degrees C), it is able to carry away more heat from the skin. This means for a given amount of time much more alcohol evaporates than water.

(iv) No. It is possible only when the speed of propogation of wave is faster than speed of light which is impossible as of now.

(v) The focal length of a spherical mirror is approximately half its radius of curvature.

(vi) Convex Mirror: A beam of light parallel to the principle axis fall of on a convex mirror all the rays after reflection diverge .  If the reflected ray is extended backwards they appear to be meeting at a point on the principle axis.
