This question is from chapter 'We Are Not Afraid To Die...If We Can All Be Together' by Alan East and Gordon Cook. The author along with his family had sailed off from Plymouth on July 1 1976 to complete round-the-world voyage in their boat Wavewalker.

The first part of the voyage passed very peacefully and pleasantly. The author’s boat, Wavewalker travelled 105,000 kilometers from Plymouth in England to Cape Town in South Africa. At Cape Town they halted for a few days replenishing their supplies for the long and dangerous journey ahead in the Southern Indian Ocean. The narrator also hired American Larry Vigil and Swiss Herb Seigler, who were profession sailors, to help him tackle the rough Southern Indian Ocean.

On December 25, 1976 their boat was 3,500 kilometers east of Cape Town. The weather had become very rough; strong gales were blowing; the waves were rising quite high. The author and his crew celebrated Christmas on the boat. The New Year was also celebrated in similar conditions.
