The British had the idea that she had a duty to spread her culture and model of government to the rest of the world where ever she colonized at the same time as exploiting the resources of those colonies ( this did not include the white colonies such as canada, new zealand Australia and I might add British America before the Revolution) these colonies were deemed to be settler colony's and had from the start a large measure of self government .Trouble or insurrection in the so called brown colonies was dealt with a divide and rule policy together with a series a local alliances with "friendly factions" who had much to gain from continued British Rule example was the maharjads of India.Modern western imperialism by America is not much different only the basic premise has changed in that the American Constitution can not tolerate colonization of any kind exceptions being the Philippines and to some extent the 19th century Mexican war.In modern times our times The US tends to support and prop up puppet governments in exchange for large US investment and expertise, political influence is mandatory of course not as certain as with the British( the were already governing the colonies anyway) in that America will and has supported unsavory regimes as long as they are Friendly to American interests.
