Communication depends a lot on our relationship with others.

Here are some pointers to consider:

1. The choice of words

When communicating with close friends and family, we tend to greet them with an informal greeting like 'Hi'. With people who are not part of our inner circle, we use more formal greetings like 'Good morning".

2. Gestures

The closer we are to someone, the more freely we use gestures. Sometimes we even depend completely on gestures like nudging and winking to communicate. In more formal relationships like that between a boss and an employee, we need to control our gestures.

3. Tone

The closer the relationship, the greater is the variety of tones we can use while communicating. For example, while dealing with a shopkeeper, we will not use a playful tone. It is inappropriate to do so. There the appropriate tone will be a matter-of-fact or an angry tone. However, when interacting with a sibling, we can use the same tones, and also playful, teasing or even a motivational tone.

4. Carefulness

The more formal a relationship, the more careful we are while communicating. This is because people we are close to, understand us well. So, we often communicate in phrases, expecting the other person to understand what we are trying to say. We take things for granted and have higher expectations from others.  However, in formal relationships one needs to communicate very clearly, specifying each word, because here we cannot take any chances. In this case, poor communication will lead to miscommunication.

5. Good and bad relationships

The tone changes when we are dealing with someone we are not on good terms with. The body language also becomes very guarded (crossed arms and legs are very common). Communication becomes stressful as negative emotions come into play.

Conclusion:

The closer the relationship, the greater the range of communication. The more formal a relationship, the fewer tools we can use to communicate.
