when a, b, c are in G.P, then

b² = ac

Given,

x + 1, 2x + 2, 5x + 1 are in G.P

So,

(2x + 2)² = (x + 1)(5x + 1)

4x² + 4 + 8x = 5x² + x + 5x + 1

4x² + 8x + 4 = 5x² + 6x + 1

x² - 2x - 3 = 0

x² - 3x + x - 3 = 0

x(x - 3) + 1(x - 3) = 0

(x - 3)(x + 1) = 0

x = 3 or x = - 1
