Step-by-step explanation:

to check whether the roots of the equation are common or equal the following condition should be satisfied:

b*2 - 4ac = 0

for 1st equation,

a*2 - 4b = 0 ......(1)

for 2nd equation,

b*2 - 4a = 0 ......(2)

on equating equation 1 &2

a*2 - 4b = b*2 - 4a

we get,

a*2 -b*2 = -4a + 4b

on simplifying,

a+b = -4
