2. Johan's mother limited his Nintendo playing to 10 hours per week. He played on only four days, a different amount of time each day. On Saturday, he played twice as much as on Wednesday. He didn't play on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. On Friday, he played the least of the days he played. If the times were all different and there were not any partial hours, how many hours did he play on each day?

Here's your answer...

Nice question. I had to stare at it for 38 seconds to figure out the answer (yes I timed it).

Let's see which days Johan played his Nintendo (I'd personally go for a PS4, but OK, I guess).

The days are Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Now, we can figure out that Johan cannot play more than 3 hours on Wednesday because that would mean he plays at least 8 hours on Saturday, which would be more than his weekly allowance.
He also cannot play for 3 hours on Wednesday because that would mean he played 6 hours on Saturday, leaving only 1 hour out of his allowance for two days.

That means he has to be playing for 2 hours on Wednesday, which means 4 hours on Saturday.

We also know that Friday was the day he played least, so he could play only 1 hour on Friday.

Which leaves 3 hours for Sunday.

So his weekly timeline was...

Monday: Nothing
Tuesday: Boring
Wednesday: 2 hours
Thursday: Ughhh
Friday: 1 hour
Saturday: 4 hours
Sunday: 3 hours

Given:

He did not play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday

On Saturday, he played twice as much as Wednesday

On Friday, he played the least

He played a total of 10 hours

To Find:

The number of hours he played each day given that there is no partial hours.

Solution:

He did not play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday

⇒ Hhe played on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Given that on Friday He played the least

⇒ Assumed He played an hour (smallest possible integer) on Friday

Given he played twice as much on Saturday as on Wednesday

⇒ Let the number of hours played on Wednesday be x

⇒ The number of hours played on Saturday is 2x

⇒ Sum of hours played on Wednesday and Saturday = 3x

⇒ The numbers of hours played on these 2 days must be 6

⇒ Wednesday = x = 2 hours

⇒ Saturday = 2x = 4 hours

Deduce the number of hours played on Sunday

⇒ Number of hours played = 10 - 1 - 6

⇒ Number of hours played = 3 hours

So, he played 2 hours on Wednesday, 1 hour on Friday, 4 hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday.
