King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). As president of the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama. King helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty, capitalism, and the Vietnam War. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover considered him a radical and made him an object of the FBI's COINTELPRO from 1963 on. FBI agents investigated him for possible communist ties, recorded his extramarital liaisons and reported on them to government officials, and, in 1964, mailed King a threatening anonymous letter, which he interpreted as an attempt to make him commit suicide.

The poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, acknowledges with regret that he understands the pain and suffering of the caged bird. The poet identifies himself with the caged bird and declares that he knows how the bird in captivity must be feeling when the world outside is gleaming and growing. The poet contrasts the condition of the caged bird with a free bird and a blooming flower.

2

The refrain at the end of each stanza evokes the empathetic feeling in the minds of the readers too. The poet, in the second stanza, tells us why the bird beats its wings violently against the bars of the cage. The wings of the bird are meant for it to fly around and sit on a bough, but the small cage does not provide that space. So, the bird flutters violently to the only possible place—its tiny perch. The poet reveals how he can relate to being trapped.

3

In the concluding lines, the poet says why the caged bird sings even though it is bruised and battered.
It is not a song of joy and celebration but a heartfelt prayer to the Almighty; an appeal to free it from the captivity, relieving it from the agonising pain.
