The basis of classification of different materials is the similarity or differences amongst them like living and non-living, biotic and abiotic etc. For example: like objects such as vegetables, fruits etc are placed together.

Classification of materials useful as it saves time and helps us find and locate things easily.  

If the characteristics of one element or object of that group are known then it becomes easier to know or make a guess about other elements of the group
