I made a tiny cut in stem of a healthy plant and observed it after two days. I found that the wound of the plant was starting to degrade.

It is because; stem is the major part of the plant which is involved in transportation of water and food from to and fro in plants. The water absorbed through the roots reaches the leaves through the stem, whereas the food prepared in the leaves is transported to the roots through the stem. When any damage is caused to the stem this mechanism gets affected and it plants starts to degrade.
