The poem “Invictus” is written by William Ernest Henley.
Invictus means ‘unconquerable’ in Latin.
- The poet wrote this poem when he was hospitalised and was taking treatment for tuberculosis of the bone.
- The poem is about courage that one must always contain in an adverse situation even if one is sick.
- One must keep dignity against all the adversities in life. We "must never lose hope" to live a self-contained life.
- In the first stanza, Henley refers to the “night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole” (lines 1 and 2)
- This night is generally a metaphor for the hardships and problems of a worldly existence. Here the writer says that he has been surrounded by hardships.
