The techniques used for cooling, heating and ventilation of the buildings in the past were more harmonious with the nature. Use of locally available resources for design of historical buildings was energy efficient. The passive cooling in historical buildings provides a source of inspiration for sustainable development in contemporary world.

The measures taken by Delhi kings to maintain the temperature is known as Passive Cooling.Following are the two measures adopted by Delhi rulers to maintain comfortable temperatures in their monuments and forts or keep them cool :
1. The surroundings of the monuments and forts were planted with shady trees. It make the temperature cool inside the Palace and improve the quality of air. Besides fountains were also built there.
2. Low thermal conductivity materials was used to built thick walls which used to transmit very less heat inside the Palace.
