Answer:

We tend to split elements into groups based on their periodic table. Broadly we consider things to be metallic or non-metallic. Some people refer to the elements in green above as metalloids.

Metals are further split into main group metals, transition metals, and f block metals. These are further split into groups:

Main group metals

Group one: alkaline metals (purple)

Group two: alkaline earth metals (dark blue)

The aqua elements on the right of the periodic table are also main group elements but don’t have a collective name.

Group 12 is sometimes referred to as main group metals, sometimes as transition metals, depending on your preference.

Transition metals

Group 4 - 11: Transition metals (light blue)

These are often split into early transition metals (left) and late transition metals (right)

F Block metals (at the bottom)

Lanthanide series (pink)

actinide series (pink_

Group 3 is sometimes referred to as main group metals, sometimes as f block metals.

The other two major groups are non-metallic main group elements.

Group 17 - halogens (orange)

Group 18 - noble gases (red)

The other groups have names like group 15 are sometimes called pnictides etc. but these are less common even in academic research.

Often chemists just refer to “group 1” or “group 13” etc.
