Himalayas are situated in the north of our country and are known as young folded mountains because their formation is not so old . Apart from this the act as guard which protect our country from the cold winds which come from central Asia . Himalayas are spread in area about 320 km from Jammu to Manipur .

The Himalayas extend in an arch shape from the North-west to North-east along the Border up to a length of 2500 km. There are three parallel ranges distinct from each other-

  • Himalayas means adobe of snow the northern most range of Himalayas is called great Himalayas or himadri. It has world highest peak and permanent snow covered areas. the Mount Everest (8850)m the highest peak of world is located is lies in this range.
  • second range is called middle Himalayas or himachal  range it is famous for hill station like Shimla,Mussoorie,Nanital,Darjeeling etc.
  • The southernmost range is called shivalik range.It is famous for valleys called Duns. For example Dehradun,Patlidun,Kotlidun.
