This crossing of the billion marks has shaken the government and the people of India to the bones. Since 1947, the population of India has increased by 360 million. A population is the number of living people that live together in the same place. A city's population is the number of people living in that city. These people are called inhabitants or residents. The population includes all individuals that live in that certain area. Other problems associated with overpopulation include the increased demand for resources such as freshwater and food, starvation and malnutrition, consumption of natural resources (such as fossil fuels) faster than the rate of regeneration, and a deterioration in living conditions.
