Given info : 2 moles of chlorine gas contains in a vessel of 5 litre capacity at 82°C

To find : the root mean square speed and pressure of gas.

solution : number of moles of gas, n = 2

volume of gas, V = 5 litre

Temperature, T = 82 + 273 = 355K

pressure , P = ?

using formula, PV = nRT

so, P = nRT/V

= (2 × 0.082 × 355)/5

= 11.644 atm

Therefore the pressure of gas is 11.644 atm

now root mean square speed, v = √{3RT/M}

here T = 355 , M = 71 g/mol = 71 × 10¯³ kg/mol , R = 25/3 J/mol/K

now v = √{3 × 25/3 × 355/71 × 10¯³}

= √{25 × 5 × 10³}

= √{125000}

= 353.55 m/s

Therefore the root mean square speed is 353.55 m/s.
