2 moles of HI are taken into an evacuated 10 litre container at 720K (temperature). The equilibrium constant equals to 0.0156 for the gaseous reaction . 2HI(g)= H2(g)+I2(g). calculate the amount of HI,H2,I2, at equilibrium

Answer:

Let at equilibrium, [H2] = [I2] = x

Initial conc.            2/10 M                   0           0

At equilibrium        0.2 -2x                   x            x

0.125 = x / (0.2-2x)

                            x = 0.025-0.25x

                            x = 0.025 /1.25

                            x=0.02

    Therefore, the equilibrium conc. of H2, I2 and HI are

                   [H2] =0.02M

                  [I2] =0.02M

                  [HI] =0.2-0.02 =0.18M
