On the basis of the type of food they eat, animals are classified into three main types :

A herbivore is an animal that consumes only plant materials.

• Example : Cow, Sheep, Kangaroo etc.

• Adaptations for eating : Herbivores have big front teeth called incisors which are used to cut and grasp the plants. They even have molars in the back to grind the plant material.

A carnivore is an animal that consumes only meat and flesh of other organisms.

• Example : Lion, Tiger etc.

• Adaptations for eating : Carnivores have sharp canines and big molars to tear the meat.

An omnivore is an animal that consumes both plant products and flesh and meat of other organisms.
